Pops goes back a long time with Family!
In 1972 Tom (Pops) Colello fled NYC for the peaceful mountain village of Woodstock. He had spent the previous 6 months managing Slug’s, the infamous lower east side jazz club where the greatest jazz in the world was corrupted by drugs, crime and violence. He rode in a car with Michael Berg and David Able. Those 2 boys from Brooklyn were prominent member of a loosely knit group that was the board of directors of the fledgling Family of Woodstock. Within a year Tom was one of two paid staff.
In his 3 years as a coordinator he shared 24/7 on-call crisis intervention duties. He assisted dozens of volunteer staff to help whoever was in need. A few of the more colorful interventions included talking a schizophrenic man out of a tree on the Village Green in the middle of the night in a thunder storm, rescuing a native American young man who was having an epileptic seizure in the woods by the artist cemetery and holding the ladder steady while a 60 years old woman psychologist counseled a woman who had barricaded herself in the upstairs bedroom, through the second floor window. Administratively, he was one of the people instrumental in getting Family recognized by United Way of Ulster County, negotiating the first contract with UC Mental Health and starting the Ellenville Program.
In the course of Family’s work it became apparent that the county DSS was interpreting regulations incorrectly in away that denied benefits to many of our clients. When he advocated for defendants in Fair Hearing we won 11 out of 12 judgments. That’s when the powers that be got very upset with Family and threatened to block our funding. But that’s another long and complicated story.
Now, 40 years later Tom’s band Pops and the Weasels will be playing joyful blues and toe tapping jazz for Family’s Holiday Dance Party to befit the children in our shelters. Come and dance with us. You may even hear some tall tails of past glory!
